missing puzzle piece

(Posted by Cathy DuBois) In this next Blog of the series on our search for living in a more conscious way, I begin to wrap up this new agenda being pawned off on workers that, if allowed, will not only cause deep trauma but many other problems that have “unintended consequences.” Please read my short prior Blogs to catch-up with this timely and fascinating discussion.  Since becoming more conscious means that we are noticing how we live, who we can trust, and how we have been effected by our choices, we need to understand this topic more deeply, because if we cannot identify a problem we have no hope of solving it.

In a recent article “5 Ways to Promote Work Life Integration Among Your Employees” written by Staci Shepherd  for Employers and Managers, I found many reasons to be wary of the hidden agenda. Read my Blog #10 in this series for her introduction and article link.  Her final point is as follows:

  5.  Make Sure Everyone Is All In

Ms. Shepherd advises her audience (Employers and Managers) that they must be sure to sell this idea of Integration to all employees and to make sure that everyone is really on board with it. She talks about the challenge this presents when the workforce has people of all ages and work experience levels. Some are salaried, some are hourly and some may be part-time hourly. Some may have worked in very structured places and some in places that can’t be so structured.

Of course, salaried employees are used to the work/life balance as they have generally been over-worked for some time now. What management thinks is enough time to get something done is not always lined up with reality. And more work is always coming along.

Hourly people track the time worked and expect a scheduled end to their workday or to get overtime pay. It is pretty straightforward and has worked for many years in many different occupations. Those who want overtime work can generally find it. This gives those who don’t want it off the hook.

Ms. Shepherd states that those who don’t buy in to this new Integration Idea will be roadblocks. Those people turn off their phones as soon as they leave and complain when bothered with calls/questions when away from the building. She says you will never hear from them on the weekends even in an emergency. She thinks this is a problem and should not be tolerated. The whole team must buy into this for it it work.

She says that this “work-life integration isn’t the creeping spread of more work, more hours, but the same pay.  Instead, it’s the opportunity to live each day without compartmentalization.” When it is managed correctly, she says, “it can lower stress, engage employees and help staff turnover.”

Ms. Shepherd finishes up her article by writing that “Flexible work hours are the freedom to have a more fulfilling daily life and a healthy, integrated personal identity.”

I will write about item 5 and summarize the whole article in in my next blog #17.  Don’t miss it as this has been an interesting and timely discussion. Be sure and sign up with your email so you don’t miss a thing.
