(Posted by Cathy DuBois) In this next Blog of the series on our search for living in a more conscious way, I uncover the new agenda being pawned off on the workers that, if allowed, will not only cause trauma but many others forms of chaos. Please read my prior Blogs to catch-up with this timely and fascinating discussion. Since becoming more conscious means that we are noticing how we live, who we can trust, and how we have been effected by our choices, we need to understand this topic more deeply, because if you cannot identify a problem you have no hope of solving it. So let’s dive in.
In a recent article “5 Ways to Promote Work Life Integration Among Your Employees” written by Staci Shepherd for Employers and Managers, I found many reasons to be wary of the hidden agenda. Read my last blog for her introduction and article link. Her first point is as follows:
- Work-Life Integration Means Learning To See Differently.
Ms. Shepherd wants you to convince your workers that they are already mixing work with play, so it is a foregone conclusion that they will love just working with a dash of play. The way Managers are encouraged to push this is to make sure the new hire is totally informed and on board with this concept. It will be explained before hiring that this is an “umbrella” approach and all work thus scheduled is already in their hourly or salaried pay. It will be part of the job and “not to be fixated upon as an intrusion.” If the hopeful new hire understands this then hire them. After, of course, you get them to sign on the dotted line.
My take on this slavery approach to work-life balance is not printable. We are not slaves and I hope we don’t “sign on” to be one. Unless you are related to the owners, you are only required to work a certain number of hours in a week. Period. No amount of calling it by some words like “integration” or learning to “see differently.” changes that. To normal, sane workers, work and private life are separate. People generally don’t want their bosses intruding away from work regardless of what Bill Gates thinks. He recently said that “flexible work arrangements are the best perk you can give you employees.” Harvard studies backed him up. His idea of flexible work hours are different than yours and mine though. Are you starting to see where this article is headed?
