Workplace PTSD

(Posted by Cathy DuBois) In this ninth Blog in the series on our search for living in a more conscious way, I tell you about some workplace trauma I was exposed to and how they were real Post Traumatic Stress events in the workplace. Please read my prior Blogs to catch-up with our discussion.  Since becoming more conscious means that we are noticing how we live, who we can trust, and how we have been effected by our choices we need to understand this topic more deeply. So let’s take a look at the next point for this series as I tell you how being an employee can effect mental health in unhealthy ways.

You now have a better understanding of some of the workplace issues that can have a major effect, over time, to your mental and emotional health. Even your physical health is at stake if these problems are ignored or you fail to take proper care of yourself.  Some authorities will tell you that you have to be a witness or victim to major events before you need to worry about this.  You now see that is not so.  In one of my work settings a manager and spouse were involved in the murder of a young man. This was stressful to all employees as the news was ongoing for the couple of years it went through the courts until one of the couple was convicted of the crime and it seemed to be over.

Up front we were all called to a meeting and told we were not to discuss this topic ever, with anyone. (Getting traumatized again.) The manager continued to come to work and discuss it openly and was in court often.  It was an excruciating time for most employees and management saw nothing wrong with that individual being at work or not and employees being unable to process it. No counseling was offered or encouraged.  At the very least, that person needed to take a leave of absence.

In another incident at the same workplace an employee committed suicide at home. It was all anyone could talk about and all the friends cried for days before a workplace  memorial service was held.  Just crazy stuff. Not much quality work got done and those who were sane soon found work elsewhere. So workplaces, and those who run them can and do create PTSD in their workers.

I know this kind of stuff happens often and the workers just get traumatized with all the insanity that comes from the top. I hear no one talking about it. The sad truth is that employers who create these environments are victims of  PTSD themselves.  The “Corporate Culture” in America is overflowing  with it.  Your only defense is to see it, understand you won’t change it, and learn to protect yourself from it and then make sure you are not the cause of creating more of it.

So what are the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?  I just recently did a 7 part series on Grief and how to deal with it. That is a good place to start as it explains how shock, disbelief, fear, sadness, helplessness, anger and shame are part of the grieving process. These are some of the emotional triggers that begin to cascade through your nervous system and need to be acknowledged in a loving way.

I will continue this discussion of PTSD and how it is sneaking into the workplace under the guise of modernizing while dehumanizing in the name of progress. So be sure and sign up with your email so you don’t miss a thing as I dig deeper into this subtle but deadly problem.

When you become conscious that this is actually a process and not a destination, each new revelation will be a challenge and not be so hard to process. If you would like me to help you navigate this passage you are making, please contact me and we can start a dialog.
